Plato and Aristotle on Mimesis

READ: Plato, selections from The Republic (373 BCE): Book 7 and Book 10.  If you'd like, you can listen to one of the sections here.

Also read Aristotle, selections from The Poetics of Aristotle (335 BCE), 31-65 of Halliwell’s translation

And read: Wiles, chapter 5.

Highly recommended:  Oedipus Rex, Sophocles, in Corrigan and brief section from Plato's Ion, on OCRA.  The full version of Ion is linked here, but go to OCRA for the excerpted selection.

Reading response: What are the terms of agreement and/or disagreement between Plato and Aristotle? Or, what is Plato's problem with Ion and does it relate to his parable of the Cave? Would Aristotle agree? Or you can choose to discuss the key role of vision in Plato's parable of the cave in relation to either The Bacchae or, if you have read it, Oedipus Rex.
