1. Bharat-Muni, selections from the Natyasatra, translated by Manomohan Ghosh (Calcutta: Manisha, 1962), (Probably ca. 2nd  c. CE, though proposed dates range over thousands of years, including 600 BCE) pages 1-17, 102-127, 146-149 
2.       The chapter ‘Indian Theatre Aesthetics’ by Daniel Meyer-Dinkgräfe in Theatre and Consciousness: Explanatory Scope and Future Potential available through OCRA.
3.       The chapter ‘Introduction: The Natyashastra and the Body in in the Natyashastra’ by Sreenath Nair in  Nair’s edited collection The Natyasastra and the Body in Performance: Essays on Indian Theories of Dance and Drama’ found on google books (we are ordering for the libary, but until it is in you should be able to read the full text, which is not long, on googlebooks). 
 

DUE:  One 1000-1500 word paper due in response to prompt(s). 

NOTE: You do not need to write an additional reading response for today in addition to your paper, but you must have read the Natyasastra before class.
